A Sharing of Breaths
An Eastern Approach to Illness and Dying

Patricia Bowden-Luccardi, LMT, NMT

"There is no greater gift of charity you can give than helping a person die well." ~ Sogyal Rinpoche

Dying is inevitable, but we rush through life like it is not. Birth and death are life's two most significant spiritual and physical transitions. We all hope for a peaceful death but have we really thought about what that is? Many of us are taking care of aging parents or have experienced loved ones passing, giving us a glimpse of this transition and sometimes with regrets and confusions about the dying process.

Ancient traditions have employed powerful meditation practices at the time of death. We will explore one of these meditative practice, originating in Tibetan medicine. Co-meditation is based on the principle that certain modes of respiration work a particular state of mind and vice versa. With no prior experience of meditation or yoga, Co-meditation gives us a direct line into the nervous system. It is a simple, yet powerful way to assist a dying person on her or his spiritual path during the last part of life's journey.

It helps terminally ill people to manage their fear, confusion and pain as they pass through this once in a lifetime event and to help make their dying a positive and spirit filled journey., It is also useful for pain management or to practice 'dying before dying', thus entering into a profound state of Presence and relaxation.

We will experience breath practices taken from Kundalini Yoga and Sufism, opening the heart and activating the neutral mind. Also an overview of near death experiences, deathbed visions, ancient funerary texts, heart advice on helping the dying, bedside compassion and the dissolution of the body, and the elements.

The series will expand upon the introductory class by exploring the different spaces in the body that are moved by breath.
